Enhancing the Quality of Music Education

Helping Music Education Thrive in Every Corner of the Valley

The St. Croix Valley Foundation’s Music Education Competitive Grant Program helps schools across the Valley enhance and enrich K–12 music education.

From sheet music and instruments to guest artists and school collaborations, these grants support experiences that deepen students’ engagement with music and ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and perform. To be eligible, the applicant must be a public or private school located in the St. Croix Valley Foundation’s six-county service area.

This unique grant program is made possible by the Music Education Endowed Fund, created in 2002 by a generous former music teacher who believed that every student deserves access to high-quality music education—regardless of zip code or school budget.

Thanks to that visionary gift, music continues to resonate throughout classrooms, concerts, and communities all across the region.

This grant opportunity is now accepting applications through October 24, 2025.

When internationally acclaimed soukous artist Siama Matuzungidi visited St. Patrick’s School in Hudson, WI, students got a firsthand look—and listen—into the power of global music.

The visit, made possible by a Music Education Grant in 2024, brought rhythm, culture, and joy to life through storytelling and performance.

A Legacy That Keeps the Music Playing

In 2002, longtime music advocate Nyda Swanson established the Music Education Valley Impact Fund at the St. Croix Valley Foundation. The widow of Earl Swanson, former CEO of Andersen Corporation, Nyda wanted to create something lasting—an endowment that would support the cause closest to her heart: music.

With help from the St. Croix Valley Foundation, Nyda created a permanent endowed fund that provides annual, competitive grants to K–12 schools across the Valley. Because this fund is endowed, it will support music education forever—ensuring future generations have the opportunity to learn, perform, and be inspired.

Since 2003, the Foundation has awarded 292 Music Education Grants totaling more than $700,000. These grants have helped schools purchase instruments, hire clinicians, replace worn-out equipment, fund concerts, and launch creative collaborations.

Today, Nyda’s gift continues to resonate in classrooms, concert halls, and communities across the Valley. This is the power of philanthropy in harmony.
