Grants That Help the Valley Thrive

Grantmaking That Strengthens Communities Across the Valley

At the St. Croix Valley Foundation, we believe strong communities are built when generosity meets real needs—supporting the people, programs, and places that make this region thrive.

That’s why we facilitate grants through multiple channels to strengthen the quality of life across the six counties that border the St. Croix River in Minnesota and Wisconsin. From rural communities to regional centers to river cities, we invest in what matters—early childhood, mental health, the arts, the environment, and so much more.

These grants help nonprofits expand access, deliver critical services, spark creativity, and strengthen quality of life across the Valley.

How We Grant

The St. Croix Valley Foundation awards grants through three primary pathways:

  • Regional Grant Programs
Foundation-led initiatives focused on cross-county priorities like early childhood development, mental health, the arts, music education, the environment, and more.

  • Local Grantmaking
Guided by our local community affiliate foundations, these hometown grants reflect local needs, values, and leadership.

  • Donor-Advised Grants
Hundreds of St. Croix Valley Foundation donors recommend grants each year to nonprofit organizations doing work they care about—locally, regionally, and beyond. These donor-directed funds extend our collective impact and fuel mission-driven change throughout the region.

In 2024, the St. Croix Valley Foundation facilitated more than 1,000 grants and scholarships totaling over $5.8 million—supporting trusted nonprofits and community-led solutions Valley-wide.

These regional grant programs invest in bold ideas and trusted nonprofits to build a stronger, more vibrant St. Croix Valley (on both sides of the river).

Each program is rooted in donor generosity and powered by earnings from long‑term endowed funds and contributions from other partners. Together, they support cross-sector solutions shaped by local insight.

Locally-Led Grantmaking

Across the St. Croix Valley, we support grantmaking that begins at the local level—guided by trusted advisory boards in each of our affiliate communities.

These community members and volunteers are deeply rooted in their hometowns. They know the people, understand the needs, and help shape local grantmaking that reflects their community’s values and priorities.

Working in partnership with St. Croix Valley Foundation, they help grow local endowment funds that ensure long-term support for what matters most—from youth and families to food access, mental health, the arts, and community connection.

Together, this collaborative model keeps generosity rooted in place—while contributing to a stronger, more connected Valley for all.
